The Most Complete NYCC 2017 Party Guide + Events List

nycc party guide with nycc logo over a scene of people partying

[UPDATED ON 10/2/17 – CHECK THURS, FRI, SAT, SUN]

Going to New York Comic Con this year? I am and I’m a bit of a party nerd so I was looking for the NYCC nightlife, but there really wasn’t any lists of NYCC 2017 parties or night time events so I decided to compile my own comprehensive list. I tried to find every afterparty, concert, speaker event, performance, and etc happening during NYCC, so enjoy this NYCC 2017 party guide. It took me a lot of browsing through Facebook, Reddit, Eventbrite, Timeout, Bleeding Cool, and the official NYCC site to put it all together.

It’s organized by day with relevant information about each event, prices, descriptions from the promoters, and my own comments about it.

Remember to live it up! Oh, and in case you’re planning on going to SDCC, you should check out our SDCC pro guide  too.

If there’s an event I missed or you’re hosting something, feel free to contact me and I’ll add it to the list.

Then, the costume contest portion of the evening puts your cosplay skills to the test, to see who is the best dressed Doctor, Companion, and Alien from the series. From cosmic fashions to crazy fun trivia questions fit for a Timelord, this one has it all!

What Were They Thinking? The Worst Music Videos of the ’80s Explained

Videology Bar & Cinema, 308 Bedford Ave Brooklyn, NY 11249

what were they thinking promo banner

In the first decade of MTV, bands sometimes delivered amazing music videos, full of breathtaking visuals and incredible creativity. And sometimes they did not. Not even close. From spectacularly bad choices to some real head-scratching concepts, some 80s music videos were so terrible that they graduate to a level where we must ask, “What were they thinking?” With information straight from interviews with the artists and video directors themselves, Music Video Time Machine’s resident video expert Stephen Pitalo will explain how inexplicable clips by Journey, Diana Ross, and the Jacksons (among others), made it to the small screen.

Uptown Showdown: Flying vs. Invisibility

Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre, 2537 Broadway at 95th Street, New York, NY 10025-6990

$16  Tickets + Info

If you’re up for a night with 2 comedians debating superpowers then this should be right up your alley. Sounds like a mix of comedy show, improv, and audience discussion.

Which superpower would you choose? Come on, you know you’ve thought about it. On the one hand, imagine how much money you’d save if you could fly for free. On the other, if you’re invisible, you could sneak into movies without having to pay. No doubt every superhero grapples with just such questions. Lucky for us, we have two teams of very opinionated comedians, including Janeane Garofalo (Wet Hot American Summer), Myq Kaplan (Last Comic Standing finalist), Joel Kim Booster (Conan), Akilah Hughes (It’s Akilah, Obviously!), Michael Ian Black (Wet Hot American Summer), and Dana Gould (The Simpsons), who will make the definitive case for whether it’s better to fly too close to the sun, or hide in plain sight.

You never know what to expect at this bi-monthly, wacky debate series that brings together two teams of comedians, writers and performers to argue a chosen topic, such as which pet is superior cats or dogs and is it better to be comfortable or fashionable? Debaters will argue these lingering questions, drawing from historical fact and personal-opinion in equal measure, and with plenty of silliness and audience participation. Forget about school reform and health care, these issues, heatedly argued by some of the funniest, smartest, intensely wacky creative thinkers around, are the topics that keep us awake at night….in a good way. Winner decided by the audience. Hosted by Matthew Love.

Shipwreck: Jurassic Park

The Bell House 149 7th Street Brooklyn, New York

$20  Tickets + Info

Hmm, a live fan fiction competition and reading performance? This could either be really bad or just slightly horrible. Anyway, it might be fun to hear some weird Jurassic Park fanfics read aloud.

Shipwreck, the San Francisco-based literary erotic fan-fiction competition, returns to New York Comic Con on Thursday, October 5.This time, we’ll take on noted theme park-enthusiast and climate change denier Michael Crichton’s seminal work on Dinosaurology, Jurassic Park. Six Great Writers take on six characters from the source material (meaning the book, with apologies to Jeff Goldblum’s abs) and write fanfic that is either salacious, horrific, hilarious, or, hopefully, some combination of the three. All the fics are read aloud to you by our Thespian-In-Residence before the writers are unmasked. You choose the your favorite fic, and the writer is cast off from polite society. Featured writers: Erin Gloria Ryan, Rakesh Satyal, Alana Massey, and last year’s champs Ariana Rebolini & Katie Heaney. All fic read by Dylan Marron (TruTV, Welcome to Night Vale).

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Two Decades With Feeling – A 20th Anniversary Celebration

Hudson Mercantile 500 West 36th St New York, NY 10018

$19  Tickets + Info

I think I’ve seen this event running at SDCC too. If you’re a big Buffy fan, you’ll likely enjoy this discussion night. Sounds like there’ll be singing and prizes too.

Join the authors of Tor Books’ Slayers & Vampires, the definitive new oral history of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel, Edward Gross & Mark A. Altman (co-authors of The Fifty-Year Mission), as they re-open the Hellmouth and look back at the secret history of the slayer who saved the world a lot. They reflect on the untold secrets of Buffy The Vampire as well as what the future might hold for Slayage in the 21st century. Also, revisiting the under-appreciated genius of Angel and the Buffy’s that never were in a candid and insightful look back at Sunnydale circa 1997. There may even be singing along the way, some surprises and special giveaways.

Rock Bar 185 Christopher St. New York, NY 10014

$5  Tickets + Info

Comedian panel watches a bunch of music videos that might be amazing or terrible, then share their reactions. Sounds both musical and comedic.

Four guests. 10 music videos. No survivors. Music Video Book Club is a comedy/video event in which host Chris Cummins (Den of Geek, Sci-Fi Explosion) and his panel of comedians and music experts watch a number of music videos from the amazing to the awful and share their opinions. The catch? The panel will only know half of the videos they will see ahead of time in order to form detailed opinions on what they’ve seen. The remaining videos will come as a complete shock to the panel, and Cummins has plumbed the sometimes demented and depraved depths of videodom to highlight some of the craziest clips ever made. What results will be an evening of musical madness that is best described as the bastard offspring of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and TRL Live.

The promoters say they’ll be announcing the venue the week of NYCC, but it has 7 rooms apparently so it should be pretty big. This is probably the most exclusive party (in the sense of requirements to attend) since it’s basically only open to people on the Funko Funatic forums. They did release a batch of tickets for public sale, but as of publication time it looks sold out. Maybe they’ll release some more? Attendees do get a goodie bag with their entry.

*$140 for nonmembers of the Funko Funatic forums

Greetings all,

We are proud to announce that we (in conjunction with Funko) will once again be throwing a party during NYCC.

*DISCLAIMER* If you are in this for free stuff, you will not have fun. If you are seeking “value” for this party, you will not get it. If you are looking to make a profit reselling items from this party, good luck because it will not be worth it.

Date: Saturday, October 8, 2017 (Evening)

Cost: $125 per sign up on this forum (Includes Dinner, fun, and a gift bag) Public sales will be at $140 a person at a future date.

This is geared towards Funatics on this forum so we will not be able to do a +1 this year. There will be an opportunity for public sales at a future date if you wanted to bring a significant other or friend. The community has grown and we want to ensure we get as many of them in as possible.
