Practice what you Preach (I’m soooo clever)
Full disclosure: I have not yet read the comic. So yes, I watched the show before I read the comic so sue me.
AMC’s series Preacher is an outstanding show; unfortunately this fact this isn’t common knowledge but it should be. From what I hear the Series, Preacher is more like a prequel and season two lines up with the comic. *(Edit: Still haven’t read the comic book series and cannot confirm this fact.) You’d think AMC would do a commercial or something. I don’t recall if I’ve even seen show be promoted anywhere besides on my streaming applications. Even then it’s not any much more advertised than all the other popular television hits. I decided to watch it on a whim because I was out of things to watch and it was suggested for me on Hulu. Also, I remember Sunny raving about the comic awhile back.
Vampires, Seraphs and an Ass Face
There certainly is enough cool footage to make a convincing trailer out of the best parts. Perhaps a show about a preacher isn’t as easily marketed as AMC’s Zombie comic-equivalent until you realize the show has Vampires, Seraphs and an Ass Face running around. The only thing I knew about Preacher is that it is based off a comic and that’s it. I didn’t know the show was going to be that cool, so why would anyone else? So without such a promotion I can see why the average person could easily overlook this series.
AMC Putting on their Sunday Best
The atmosphere and the overall feel I get from AMC’s Preacher is where I think it succeeds the most. The series is dark but humorous; one of my favorite combinations. When it’s time for action not much is spared. Fight scenes give us guns, knives, chainsaws and a bunch of other creative weapons and ways to be killed which I don’t want to spoil. (Actually I just have a bad memory but for credibility sake!) The best part is that the choreography is well done and it is tastefully gory. The contrast you get from mysteriously eerie to trigger happy blood bath is quite a rush.
My absolute favorite thing about this show, however has got to be the main characters of the show. Tulip and Jesse have the perfect Bonnie and Clyde thing going on. I can’t wait to see their chemistry in the next season. Dominic Cooper as Jesse is a smooth super cool and devilishly handsome man of God. Ruth Negga as Tulip is hands down my favorite character in the show. She’s hot and fiery, plays no games and hell bent on revenge. She is like the Tyrion Lannister of the show; you can’t help but love her hate.
The rest of the cast is great, too. Joseph Gilgun as Cassidy the Irish Vampire is a quirky and fun BFF who really isn’t the type to sugar coat. Even the sub-man characters are a little treat. Arseface was written as an annoying but still likable character, both of the Angels are hilariously clueless and the antagonists are all completely insane. This cast truly steals the show. I could probably do a whole segment on just my favorite characters alone. (Maybe I will)…
Where Preacher suffers most is that it starts off pretty slow (this might be a little hypocritical because I do have to admit that it does give it that dry suspense western feel. Even a little bit in the first episode. The show does enough to keep you interested but it did lose me a couple times while sitting though the full forty something minutes. Overall still loved the Preacher and its whole cast. It is safe to say we can be excited for Season 2.
